Thailand's Cabinet Gives Casino Idea Report 30 Day

Thailand's cabinet approved a parliamentary committee report on the feasibility of casino resorts in the country, allowing the finance ministry to study whether and how to implement such policy measures for 30 days.

The decision was made at the Cabinet's weekly meeting on Tuesday, according to several Thai media.

At the end of March, a report on the subject of a parliamentary committee chaired by Deputy Finance Minister Houlapun Amonvivat was approved by the House of Commons.

On Wednesday, the Bangkok Post newspaper quoted government deputy spokesperson Kenyan Kaoujit as saying there would have to be public engagement and public hearings before the government makes a final decision on legalizing casinos.

Nevertheless, she observed that the proposal for what is called an "entertainment center" in Thailand is an important part of the government's "fun economy" sector. It is said to include tourism, sports, entertainment venues, and conferences, incentives, conferences, and exhibition (MICE) businesses.

Each entertainment center requires at least 100 billion THBs ($2.75 billion) of investment, according to a committee report.

According to a recent report by Maybank Investment Bank Bhd, "it is expected to be licensed in phases and up to eight entertainment centers will be built."

Thailand's National Economic and Social Development Commission has set a target of 80 million foreign tourists a year by 2027, more than the country's current population, the report said.
